Windows 11’s Widgets pane has often been a point of contention for many users. Its default behavior, popping up with a simple hover over the taskbar icon, can be quite disruptive to your workflow. However, instead of dismissing it entirely, you might be surprised at how valuable this feature can become with a few simple tweaks.
I’ve personally found the Widgets pane to be an excellent tool for quick access to news, weather updates, stock quotes, and notifications—all thanks to a bit of personalization. Whether you want to disable it, prevent accidental triggers, or fully customize its content, here’s how you can take control and make Windows 11 Widgets work for you.
Stop Accidental Triggers (or Hide It Completely)
For those who prefer a clean taskbar and no Widgets whatsoever, disabling the icon is straightforward. Simply navigate to Settings, select Personalization, and then click on Taskbar. Under the “Taskbar items” section, locate the switch for Widgets and toggle it to the “Off” position; the icon will instantly disappear.
However, if you appreciate having Widgets accessible but hate the auto-trigger, there’s a better way. My preferred method keeps the icon visible but requires a click to open the pane. To enable this, launch the Widgets pane by clicking its icon, then click the Settings icon (it looks like a gear) in the upper-right corner of the window.
Here, you’ll find a toggle labeled “Open Widgets board on hover.” Turn this switch off. Close the Settings window, then click anywhere outside the Widgets pane to close it. Now, you can confidently hover over the Taskbar icon without any interruptions; the pane will only appear when you actively click on it.
Customize Your Widgets Feed
Once you have the Widgets pane behaving how you want, it’s time to personalize the content. The feature primarily offers two feeds: a Discover feed for MSN content and a dedicated feed for your actual utility widgets. You might notice your Discover feed has “Discover,” “Watch,” and “Play” menus at the top, segmenting news, videos, and games.
Microsoft has been actively refining the Windows 11 user experience, and the Widgets feature is no exception. A newer interface consolidates all Discover content into a single, streamlined view, removing the need to switch between separate menus. To enable this, open the Widgets pane and look for a switch labeled “Switch to new look.”
Toggling this option on will present all content in one unified feed, making it easier to jump between the Discover section and your personalized Widgets. Scroll through both feeds to see all the available stories and information. The Discover feed typically shows weather, stock quotes, and other snippets in one column, with news articles filling the other.
You can interact with individual stories by clicking on them to view the full content, or click the Refresh button at the top to load a new batch of stories. To help the algorithm learn your preferences, hover over a story’s card and click the thumbs-up icon to indicate you like it. The Widgets feed, on the other hand, presents daily information cards and quick access to built-in tools; click on any item to view it or use its functionality in a separate webpage.
Personalize Your Discover and Widgets Feeds
To truly make the Discover feed your own, you can manage individual content cards and news sources. On the left side of the Discover feed, hover over a card and click the ellipsis icon (three dots). Depending on the card, you can often hide it, or personalize its information—for instance, changing the location for the Weather card.
For news stories, clicking the ellipsis icon provides options to Follow a source to see more of its content, or Block it to stop seeing stories from that channel. To manage your overall info cards, click your profile photo or icon in the upper right corner of the Widgets pane. From the Personalize screen, select Info cards, then toggle individual switches to turn cards on or off.
Further personalize your Discover feed by clicking your profile icon again and selecting the Discover heading. Here, you can review recommended topics and publishers, clicking the plus icon to follow any that interest you. The Following section lets you see all the channels you’re subscribed to, offering an easy option to Unfollow any you no longer wish to see.
Similarly, the Blocked section displays all the channels you’ve prevented from appearing, with an option to Unblock them if you change your mind. Under the Notifications heading, you can review and disable notifications for specific topics, or toggle off “Get Notifications” to stop them entirely.
Now, let’s turn our attention to the Widgets feed itself. Click the Widgets icon on the left side of the pane. To remove an unwanted widget, simply click its ellipsis icon and choose Remove. To add new widgets, click the plus icon in the upper right corner of the Widgets feed.
Browse through the categories on the left; if an “Add widget” button is grayed out, that widget is already in your feed. Otherwise, click Add widget to include it. Many widgets also offer customization options: for example, clicking the ellipsis icon for the Weather widget lets you Customize Widget to change the location or temperature unit.
Adjusting Your Widgets Layout
Once you have all your preferred widgets in place, you can fine-tune their appearance and organization. Many widgets offer different size options; click the ellipsis icon for a widget and you may see choices for Small, Medium, or Large. Select the size that best fits your preference and the available space.
To rearrange your widgets, click the ellipsis icon and select from options like “Move up,” “Move down,” “Move left,” or “Move right,” depending on the widget’s current position. For more intuitive control, you can also manually drag and drop widgets. Simply click and hold a widget, move it to its desired spot, and then release it.
While the Widgets pane might initially seem like an unnecessary interruption, it offers a powerful array of personalized information and quick tools. By taking the time to customize its behavior and content, you can transform it from a minor annoyance into a genuinely useful and engaging part of your Windows 11 experience.
