Welcome to Codex, your intelligent AI assistant designed to streamline your workflow and supercharge productivity. Getting started is easier than you think, and in this guide, we’ll walk you through setting up your workspace and understanding its core components. You’ll quickly discover how to manage your projects, initiate tasks, and interact with Codex effectively.
When you first open Codex, you’ll notice a clean, intuitive interface featuring a sidebar menu, dedicated sections for projects and settings, and a dynamic chat window. Don’t worry about mastering everything instantly; we’ll focus on the essentials you need to start automating tasks right away. Let’s dive in and get you familiar with your new digital partner.
Navigating Your Codex Workspace
The sidebar is your central navigation hub, offering quick access to your threads, projects, and advanced tools. Most of your daily work with Codex will begin by creating a new thread. Think of a “thread” in Codex much like you would a “chat” in platforms like ChatGPT, where you engage in a continuous conversation.
You have the flexibility to create a thread that stands on its own as a quick query or task, or one that’s neatly nested within a larger project. To start, simply select the “New thread” option. From there, you can easily link it to an existing project, create an entirely new project on the fly, or keep it as a standalone conversation for simpler interactions.
Need to revisit past conversations or tasks? The built-in search function allows you to quickly locate previous threads and projects, ensuring no valuable information or progress is ever lost. Furthermore, Codex supports various plugins, which extend its capabilities by enabling it to follow repeatable processes or connect with other tools. We’ll explore plugins and skills in much greater detail in a dedicated section.
Organizing Your Work with Projects
Projects are fundamental to keeping your work organized and grouping related tasks together within Codex. Crucially, a project in Codex is directly linked to a specific folder on your computer where you conduct that particular set of tasks. This design ensures that when working locally, Codex will only make changes to files located within that designated project folder.
This local linking offers peace of mind, knowing that Codex will operate strictly within defined boundaries. If you need to work with a different set of files or initiate a new endeavor, simply create a new project. Even if your project folder starts empty, it serves as the designated location for any new files Codex might create during its operations, keeping everything neatly compartmentalized.
Beyond project structure, your Settings allow you to fine-tune Codex’s behavior, including permissions, personalization options, and even whether it can continue working while your computer sleeps. There are several important settings for new users to review, which we’ll cover in detail in our dedicated Settings section, ensuring Codex aligns perfectly with your preferences and workflow.
Interacting with Codex: Threads in Action
Interacting with a thread in Codex is remarkably intuitive, much like having a natural conversation. You can communicate with Codex in plain language, describing what you want, specifying any relevant files it should use, and defining what “done” looks like for your task. There’s no need for overly technical prompts or complex instructions; just tell Codex your goal.
The truly significant difference between Codex and a standard chat AI is its ability to take action while it works. Depending on your task and the permissions you grant, Codex can actively inspect files, create new documents, edit existing information, organize data, or even build entirely new structures for you. This proactive capability transforms conversation into tangible results.
It’s important to note that Codex might pause its operation if your computer enters sleep mode. For tasks that require a longer processing time, you can easily adjust this behavior in your settings to ensure uninterrupted work. This small tweak can save you from having to restart lengthy processes, optimizing your productivity.
Mistakes happen, but with Codex, you don’t have to abandon a task if you forget a detail or change your mind. While Codex is actively working, you can simply type in your new instruction and select “Steer” to course-correct its actions in real-time. For example, if you initially asked Codex to remove a paragraph but then decide it needs to be rewritten, you can issue the “Steer” command, and Codex will seamlessly adjust its approach.
One of Codex’s most powerful features is its ability to run multiple tasks simultaneously without interruption. Most users leverage this by having several threads working concurrently. Imagine one thread meticulously cleaning up a complex spreadsheet while another drafts a detailed project tracker – all happening at the same time, maximizing your efficiency and throughput.
