This groundbreaking technology didn’t just capture the imagination of innovators; it immediately caught the eye of cybercriminals. They quickly began exploiting large language models (LLMs) to generate malicious emails, ranging from untargeted spam to highly sophisticated, targeted attacks aimed at stealing funds and sensitive information. This marked a new era in digital threats.

Since then, cybercriminals have comprehensively adopted AI tools, using them to supercharge their illicit operations. They now leverage this technology for a wide array of activities, including composing convincing phishing emails and creating hyperrealistic deepfake clips. AI also helps them tweak malicious software, known as malware, making it significantly harder to detect by traditional security systems.

Furthermore, AI is being employed to automate the search for vulnerabilities within networks and computer systems, drastically accelerating the discovery process. It makes launching attacks faster, cheaper, and easier than ever before, enabling criminals to infiltrate targets with unprecedented efficiency. For instance, Interpol has warned that scam centers across Southeast Asia are rapidly embracing inexpensive AI tools to target a greater number of potential victims and quickly adapt their operations to new locations.

Similarly, the United Arab Emirates recently reported foiling a series of shadowy AI-backed attacks targeting its vital sectors. The colossal scale at which these spammy, scattergun attacks can be pumped out means they don’t need to be highly sophisticated to be effective. They simply need to be lucky enough to bypass an undefended machine or land in the inbox of an unsuspecting victim at just the right moment.

Many organizations are already struggling to cope with the sheer volume and persistence of cyberattacks aimed at them. This problem is projected to worsen significantly as more criminals are enticed to try their luck and the capabilities of publicly available generative AI systems continue to improve. The sheer accessibility of these tools amplifies the risk for everyone.

Earlier this month, AI company Anthropic claimed that Mythos, a model it has developed and is currently testing, discovered thousands of critical vulnerabilities. These included flaws in every major operating system and web browser, highlighting AI’s potent ability to uncover digital weaknesses. While Anthropic states all these vulnerabilities have been patched, the model’s release is being delayed, and a consortium of tech companies called Project Glasswing has been formed to apply these capabilities defensively.

Currently, cybersecurity researchers maintain optimism that many sloppier attacks can still be thwarted through basic yet crucial defenses. This underscores the paramount importance of keeping software updated and rigorously adhering to network security protocols. However, how well-positioned we will be to fend off truly sophisticated, AI-driven attacks in the future remains a much less clear and pressing question.

The good news amidst this rising tide of threats is that AI is also being deployed as a formidable defensive tool. Businesses are harnessing its power to protect against the very dangers it helps create. Each day, Microsoft, for example, processes an astounding over 100 trillion signals that its AI systems flag as potentially malicious or suspicious.

The company reports that between April 2024 and April 2025, its AI-powered defenses managed to block a staggering $4 billion worth of scams and fraudulent transactions. Many of these illicit activities were undoubtedly aided by generative AI content, underscoring the vital role AI plays in both offense and defense. Ultimately, the same technology that makes such advanced attacks possible could very well be our best bet at keeping us safe in the years to come, turning the tide in the ongoing cybersecurity arms race.
