These individuals often handle information that, if compromised, could have severe repercussions, making advanced protection not just a convenience but a necessity.
A Paradigm Shift in Account Protection
Advanced Account Security fundamentally transforms how users authenticate and recover their OpenAI accounts, moving away from traditional, more vulnerable methods. Users who enable this feature will no longer rely on conventional passwords. Instead, they are required to add two physical security keys or passkeys to their accounts, drastically reducing the risk of successful phishing attacks that often target password credentials.

Instead, users must utilize secure recovery keys, backup passkeys, or their physical security keys to regain access. To facilitate this transition, OpenAI has partnered with Yubico, offering lower-cost YubiKey bundles specifically for Advanced Account Security users.
A crucial aspect of this new system is the deliberate removal of OpenAI’s support team from account recovery processes. Once Advanced Account Security is enabled, the support team no longer has access or control over any recovery options. This ingenious design prevents attackers from attempting to breach accounts by targeting support portals with social engineering tactics, effectively closing a common vulnerability.
Enhanced Control and Visibility
Beyond authentication, Advanced Account Security implements several other protective measures designed to bolster overall account integrity. It enforces shorter sign-in windows and sessions, requiring users to log in more frequently on their devices. This reduces the exposure window should a device fall into the wrong hands.
Furthermore, the system generates immediate alerts whenever someone logs into a locked-down account. These notifications direct users to a dashboard where they can review all active ChatGPT and Codex sessions, providing transparent oversight and quick detection of unauthorized access. An additional, significant benefit for Advanced Account Security users is that the option to opt out of having their ChatGPT conversations used for model training is on by default, enhancing data privacy without requiring manual configuration.
